Session Description:

For the first time in history, chronic illness has overtaken acute disease as the major health problem across Canada and around the world.

The latest data suggests that more than thirty percent of working-aged Canadians suffer from at least one chronic health condition. That number is expected to rise due to the aging workforce.

Many organizations now have employee assistance, wellness programs, or other resources for their employees. However, these resources are wasted if employees who are most in need do not come forward to use them due to fear of discrimination.

Furthermore, many of the policies and procedures designed to combat absenteeism and improve workplace productivity are becoming quickly outdated as both technology and human health undergo fundamental changes.

This session will look at the real-life challenges faced by the chronically ill worker and the new strategies needed to address them.

The learning objectives of this session are to:

  • Understand the crucial differences between chronic and acute illness and why   chronic conditions require different workplace strategies.
  • Learn how to reduce stigma and misunderstanding so that employees feel comfortable accessing needed resources.
  • Identify key tools to increase productivity for employees with chronic illness and build a business case for change.
